Let's Go Green

Taking into consideration the worsening plastic pollution across the globe, retailers are switching to environmentally friendly packaging solutions.

Consumers are increasingly favouring products with packaging that has a minimal impact on the environment, pushing both manufacturers and designers across the globe to 'Go Green'.

By definition, eco-friendly packaging is any packaging that's easy to recycle, safe for individuals and the environment, and is made out of recycled materials.  It uses materials and manufacturing practices with minimal impact on energy consumption and natural resources.

Also commonly known as sustainable or green packaging, eco-friendly packaging solutions aim to:

  • Lessen the amount of product packaging
  • Promote the use of renewable/reusable materials
  • Cut back on packaging-related expenses
  • Eliminate the use of toxic materials in the production of packaging
  • Provide options to recycle packaging easily

Use Sustainable Packaging Materials

If you're aiming for a green packaging design, using sustainable packaging materials is something you simply can't ignore.  However, there's a difference between recycled and recyclable.

Using packaging materials that are recyclable is one thing, but it's even greener to use recyclable materials that are from recycled materials.

 Aim For That Perfect Fit

No matter how green your packaging materials may be, you can only really call your packaging design eco-friendly if it requires a minimal amount of materials.

In other words, check your final design for excess space and/or (padding) material and eliminate everything that isn't necessary to ensure the safe transportation of the product.

Styrofoam Is A Definite No-No!

Don't let your eco-friendly efforts go to waste.

If your product needs padding for safe transportation then consider biodegradable bubble wrap or recycled paper instead.

 Advertise Your Sustainable Packaging Design

Knowing you are doing your bit for the environment is rewarding and your client will be pleased to see that your design is also boosting sales.

Consumers won't know your packaging is sustainable unless you tell them.  You can do so by simply mentioning it, or by pulling out all the stops and giving your packaging design a green overhaul.

Make green the base colour and add eco-friendly symbols (think leaves, recycling symbols etc) to raise your consumers' awareness.

If your business is looking to implement a new form of sustainable packaging, it's important to remember that it doesn't have to be complicated.  Eco-friendly packaging materials are just a click away with reusable, recyclable, biodegradable, and compostable options.
