The Chinese New Year red envelope is a traditional gift for children during Chinese New Year. In China, the red envelope is called yasui qian (压岁钱 /yaa-sway chyen/), which means 'suppressing ghosts money'. Those who receive a red envelope are wished another safe and peaceful year.
The custom of giving red envelopes originates in some of the oldest stories of Chinese New Year. As the legend goes, a demon known as 'Sui' terrorized children while they slept on New Year’s Eve, and parents would try to keep their children awake all night to protect them.
Those born in the Year of the Ox are said to be determined, strong and conservative.
Challenge
To produce a rigid style of packaging conveying a premium quality.
Solution
Working with their design team we produced a sliding box drawer lined with the same colours to the outside.
Spot gloss UV varnish accented the mandarins and foliage on the front with the addition of gold foiling on the reverse. A touch of ribbon allows for easy access to the internal sliding drawer containing a 'money wallet' in matching colours and a repeat of the gold foiling elements.
Result
Strong and durable sliding drawer box which is easy to open with an internal compartment.
Conclusion
Brands prefer these custom sliding boxes for their durability, ease of use and their overall feel. The open and close style is elegant and non-compromising on quality.
